The attached figure is from a paper published from my lab in Endocrinology this month (Endocrinology. 2016 Feb;157(2):666-78. doi: 10.1210/en.2015-1753. Epub 2015 Nov 20. “Reducing Adiposity in a Critical Developmental Window Has Lasting Benefits in Mice.” Lerea JS, Ring LE, Hassouna R, Chong AC, Szigeti-Buck K, Horvath TL, Zeltser LM.
In this paper we showed that early-onset obesity is associated with structural impairments in brown adipose tissue mitochondria, which further exacerbate obesity by reducing basal metabolism. Reducing adiposity in young animals largely corrects the mitochondrial malformation and leads to long-lasting increases in basal metabolism and reduced adiposity.
