In this paper we showed that early-onset obesity is associated with structural impairments in brown adipose tissue mitochondria, which further exacerbate obesity by reducing basal metabolism. Reducing adiposity in young animals largely corrects the mitochondrial malformation and leads to long-lasting increases in basal metabolism and reduced adiposity.
